The screenshots above from a recent story on Business Insider show Rep. Patrick McHenry and his position on salaries for U.S. Congress members.
“Most of us live on the salary,” he said.
And I am not against raising the salaries of congressional members if they have the need to keep up with multiple residencies in this economy, but they do get a little more than just a salary.
According to this, they get a lot more allowances:

Money for staff, offices, travel, equipment, and other “goods and services” are included.
But what is really interesting here is that salaries for congressional members and employees are funded by tax money and McHenry’s argument to raise his salary as a public servant should translate to other jobs for public servants – at least based on that idea of being able to “live on the salary.”
Like teachers.
From The Guardian McHenry, who is from North Carolina said,
“You especially need the staff to be able to go toe-to-toe with the people they’re regulating or overseeing in the executive branch, which means you need to get the highest quality folks.”
And then that report stated:

North Carolina still has the lowest federally allowed minimum wage in the nation.
Might want to see how McHenry has voted on matters involving raising the minimum wage.
