There Are Other Things FROZEN In NC Such As Teacher Salaries

Here is the salary schedule that is in place for the 2024-2025 school year.

For those who are not teachers, make sure to pay attention to years 15-24.

Frozen. Like that precipitation outside in many NC homes right now.

10 years of the same.

There is no longevity pay during these years as well.

Someone who has been teaching for 24 years makes the same as someone who has been teaching for 15.

Amounts toward retirement will be the same.

Not much of a raise in the last couple of years with rapid inflation.

If anyone in Raleigh cares to explain how those 10 frozen years of pay is supposed to attract teachers to the profession, then speak up. But it looks blatantly like a ploy to keep people from being career educators.

  1. The same is essentially true for those who work in higher ed. In the 20 years I have been a faculty member, there are sometimes annual raises that don’t keep pace with increases in the cost of living, there are rarely (2-3 times) very small (2-3%) merit-based raises, and there are almost never (1-2 times) any adjustments for the compression of salaries over time. There is no financial incentive for faculty or staff to remain in the UNC system when other universities and university systems actually demonstrate an interest in retaining their strong employees. There is also no financial incentive for performing better than average. Imagine working for 20 years for an institution, regularly receiving annual reviews that show your performing better than average, and only getting a ~2% merit-based raise twice….. This is worse for the public school teachers for sure because their salaries are so incredibly low relative to national norms……
