Many have asked me over the years if a teacher can be a school board member and still be in the classroom.
At least in my LEA, one cannot. Many teachers over the years have run for positions on the school board, but each has had to stipulate that he/she would step away from the classroom to serve.
That should not be the case. If anything, CRT hoaxes, indoctrination witch hunts, and other conspiracy theories have shown that many school boards are not really listened to teachers.
People can say that a teacher is too involved in the school system to view it from different angles and through diverse lenses.
They would be wrong.
Teachers are voters. Teachers are parents of public school students. Teachers are tax payers.
Teachers know the school system well. From the inside out.
That perspective has largely been missing from many school board meetings.

And it’s desperately needed.

FYI: The WSFCS had a teacher who had previously worked in the WSFCS district and was then working for the Guilford Co. school district who was elected and became Chair. However, her leadership was questionable at times and some of the financial issues goes back to this particular board time frame. Also, the current School Board has a recently retired WSFCS teacher and a recently retired WSFCS Principal–both of whom have had difficulty with the issues currently facing this board.
In trying to find the best School Board candidates to become effective school board members, we need broad representation on the board including educators who understand and/or who have worked in large public educational systems. However most importantly, we need better criteria for vetting School Board candidates vs. just checking of categories of teacher, educator, businessperson, parent, etc.
We need candidates with superb critical thinking skills who understand the basics in budgeting and basic finances and who are willing to step up and continually ask the hard questions. We need candidates who can articulate the issues facing public school district with the public in an effective manner. Basically, we need school board members who can provide effective leadership not coverups.

Know all of this. My argument was that a current teacher should be allowed to be on the board.
